Alas, if her almost-bridegroom had stayed around long enough to die AFTER the wedding, at least Edith would be a widow and would have license to conduct discreet affairs. As it is, she doesn't, and this guy just seems weak, glib, and selfish to me. Notice that he folded up pretty easily when confronted by brother-in-law Matthew. He's probably glad Matthew died!

I'm happy for Bates and Anna, though. And one story-line that's delighting me is Daisy's development, from downtrodden kitchen maid to self-respecting daughter-in-law of prosperous local farmer. There's a lovely bit of camerawork early on in the season, where we see farm-workers talking, then one of them touches a finger to his forehead, a customary greeting to a social superior back then. THEN (if I remember it right) we see Daisy approaching the house and realize that it was Daisy being greeted that way. She's come up in the world, and if Mr. Mason has his way, she won't spend her life in service, as she'd always supposed. I'm very interested to see how they'll continue her storyline in the next season. She's really grown.

And I already miss Matthew. I didn't know anything about the actor's planned departure, and the ending put me off the show completely for a while -- first Sybil, now Matthew; were they going to use tragic deaths as a standard way to develop new storylines? I was actually relieved to learn that it wasn't the producers who wanted Matthew to die. And I wish the actor the best: it's natural for a young man to want to take advantage of new opportunities! ... but I'll miss Matthew!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1636632642432287906.post-49458243445440249912013-02-20T19:43:09.488-08:002013-02-20T19:43:09.488-08:00Anna found out that Bates was part(?) I can see Tom now being the main man in charge of the estate, but who will he have to confide in (he and Matthew were seemingly good friends)? I cannot see his brother, Kieran, re-appearing...that alone would set Lady Mary crazy! There are some story lines that might come up...Daisy...perhaps she would hook up with Tom..or Rose...who knows? And, there is 'poor' Edith...nothing ever works out for that gal...will she be the one who takes over the running of Downton? Or will Mary continue to impede everything she does? She's been so "jolly hockey sticks" all the time, so it would be interesting to have her fall apart in light of Matthew's death. It would also give the good doctor ample reason to rush to the rescue! I also suspect that they have a plot line involving a nanny coming up because it seemed very odd that Mr. Carson was minding little Sybil because nanny was "around here somewhere." I think it's because they wanted to take special care in casting the nanny and hadn't done it yet. I don't see Branson with Mary at all. I'd like Rose and Branson to get together. I also keep wondering if James "doth protest too much" because he really IS gay and just can't accept it. Maybe they'll give the Bateses a disabled child. Lots of bittersweet opportunities in that one. These stories can never let anyone be blissful for too long can they? So many storylines had been wrapped up, it was time for something really awful to happen. Poor Matthew and Mary. At least Mary and Tom can grieve together and raise their children at Downton, and Downton itself will survive thanks to Matthew.

I hope season 4 starts right after Matthew's funeral. I saw spoilers early on and knew what would happen, but I was disappointed that there was no real resolution. And knowing DA, they'll just skip ahead a year, and there's won't be anything additional.

I LOVE this show, but I guess it feels predictable. The Thomas/Jimmy line was inevitable. The fight this week was so easy to figure out, as was Thomas's intervention. I don't like that. Then, when they looked so happy, I knew: Matthew had to die. But I don't think that's going to make the series uninteresting in the future, although I agree with your assessment of Anna and Bates. I guess it's hard to make happiness interesting in a story. No conflict, right? It's too bad they don't start having some problems to spice it up. but in the ongoing saga of Downton Abbey there's is so much that can go wrong, and I really like so much seeing so many characters developing within the parameters of that era. It's never been about just one person, or even group of people, it's the house as a whole; people come and go, they marry, they die, but the house remains.
